FROM THE GROUND UP

After dinner and dishes, you read,
to salvage something out of the day.
These are places and customs that will always
be there, no matter how much you try
to wish them away. They breathe as you breathe.

Today I stood alone among things
I don’t know anymore; “the future,” I said,
“the future.”
